Chris learned this job in order. Shampooing first, until he could do it properly. Then drying. Then combing and sectioning. Then, finally, cutting. Nobody handed him a chair, and he has said many times that the years of assisting taught him more than anything that came after.
That is how we teach it here. Our apprenticeship is a paid, structured program that takes you from beauty school fundamentals to floor-ready, with a senior stylist beside you the whole way.
Why this one is personal
Chris did not go to college. He built a good living with his hands, in a trade he loves, and he is clear-eyed about what that means for other people.
He wants to train kids coming out of high school who do not want a lecture hall. He wants to hire out of this neighborhood. This is a real path to a real career, and he would like more people to know that door is open.
Cate came up this way, as the first full time apprentice at Crush. Chris is honest that he is learning to teach as he goes, and getting better at it. You get the benefit of that.
What you will actually do
- Work beside senior stylists every day. Watch live consultations. Learn formulation, timing, and how to read what a client is not saying.
- Move through the disciplines in order. Advanced cutting, custom color formulation, blonding, precision styling.
- Practice on models during dedicated training days, with direct coaching and honest feedback.
- Learn the business side. Consultations, retail recommendations, client retention, and building your presence.
- Hit clear technical benchmarks and test-outs, so you always know where you stand and what is next.
Your path
Associate, then Junior Stylist, then Senior Stylist. Defined steps with pay increases and tiered pricing at each stage. No vague promises about being promoted someday.

Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?
We will always try to fit in a walk-in, and sometimes we can. Booking ahead is safer, because it holds your stylist and the right amount of time. Book online or call 718-204-2096.
What is parking like?
Street parking is usually available on Ditmars and the side streets around us. If you are taking the train, we are a short walk from the Ditmars Blvd stop on the N and W.
Do you work with curly and textured hair?
Yes, every day. Come in with your hair worn the way you normally wear it so we can see your real curl pattern before we cut.
How much is a haircut?
It depends on your hair and the service. Starting prices are on the pricing page, and your stylist confirms the exact figure at your consultation before any work begins.
